1993 – 2008“Ariana Grande-Butera was born in Boca Raton, Florida, in June 1993 and grew up in this palm-lined city on the Atlantic coast north of Fort Lauderdale. Her mother, Joan Grande, was the chief executive of a company making marine communications equipment, and her father, Edward Butera, ran a graphic design firm. Her half-brother Frankie, ten years older, was a performer too, and her Italian-American grandmother, Marjorie, whom she called Nonna, was a constant, loving presence in their home. Music and theatre filled her childhood. She sang along to Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey and Judy Garland, and at eight she sang the national anthem at a Florida Panthers ice hockey game. She performed with Boca Raton's Little Palm Theatre for young people and then the Fort Lauderdale Children's Theatre, playing Annie and roles in Beauty and the Beast and The Wizard of Oz; its director recalled that when she opened her mouth to sing, everybody went wow. She went to Pine Crest School and North Broward Preparatory School, and spent her summers on boats and at the beach. Her parents separated when she was about nine, and she has said music was her way of coping. In 2008, at fifteen, she landed a role in the Broadway musical 13, and her mother arranged for her to keep studying while she performed in New York. A year later she was cast in the Nickelodeon series Victorious, and she went on to become one of the biggest pop stars in the world. In 2024 she played Glinda in the film of Wicked, the musical she had loved since childhood.”
