1963 – 1993“I spent the last thirty years of my life at La Paisible — The Peaceful One — a farmhouse in the Swiss village of Tolochenaz on the shores of Lake Geneva. I had been one of the most famous women in the world, and La Paisible gave me the life I had always wanted beneath the fame: a garden I could tend myself, mornings of extraordinary quiet, the lake and the Alps visible from the windows. I planted roses and vegetables and fruit trees, and learned that gardening was a form of optimism. After I became a UNICEF ambassador in 1988 I travelled to the world's poorest places and came back to La Paisible to recover. I died here in January 1993 and am buried in the village churchyard.”
