📍54 University Avenue, Rangoon, Yangon, Myanmar
1988 – 2010“Aung San Suu Kyi was born in Rangoon in June 1945, the daughter of Aung San, the leader of Burma's independence movement, who was assassinated when she was two. She studied in India and at Oxford, married the British scholar Michael Aris, and raised their two sons in Oxford. In 1988 she returned to Rangoon to nurse her dying mother at the family home at 54 University Avenue, on the shore of Inya Lake, and was drawn into the uprising against military rule, becoming leader of the National League for Democracy. In 1989 the army placed her under house arrest there, and she was confined in the house for about fifteen of the next twenty-one years. She chose not to leave Burma, even when Michael was dying of cancer in 1999, fearing she would not be allowed back. She received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1991 and was released in 2010.”
