📍Almirante Sur, Vega Baja, Puerto Rico
1994 – 2016“Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio grew up in Almirante Sur, a rural barrio of Vega Baja on Puerto Rico's north coast, the eldest of three boys. His father drove trucks and his mother taught English at a local school. He knew he wanted to sing from the age of five and sang in the choir of his Catholic parish until he was thirteen, while listening at home to his mother's salsa and ballads and, later, to reggaeton and trap. After high school he studied audiovisual communication at the University of Puerto Rico in Arecibo and worked for three years at the Econo supermarket in Vega Baja, bagging groceries and then working the till. In his spare time he made beats and uploaded songs to SoundCloud, where they spread across the island. His music has never left home: the barrio, the island's landscapes and the threat of Puerto Ricans being priced out of their own neighbourhoods run through his album Debí Tirar Más Fotos. Vega Baja now celebrates him as its own.”
