2009 – 2017“Barack Obama lived in the White House from January 2009 to January 2017 with his wife, Michelle, their daughters, Malia and Sasha, and Michelle's mother, Marian Robinson. He was the first African American president, and he has written about walking the halls at night and thinking about the history of the building, which was built partly by enslaved people. The family tried to make the residence feel like a home: the girls had friends to stay, and Michelle planted the first major vegetable garden at the White House since the Second World War, using it to promote healthy eating. The Obamas hosted music and poetry evenings in the East Room, celebrating jazz, Motown and spoken word. Obama has written about the weight of the job and the importance of family dinners in the residence during his two terms, in his memoir A Promised Land.”
