📍Pennsylvania Avenue, Baltimore, MD 21217, USA
1915 – 1928“I was born in Baltimore in 1915, on Pennsylvania Avenue in the heart of the Black community of a deeply segregated city. My childhood there was not happy — my mother was a teenager who could barely care for me, and I spent time in a Catholic reform school after being placed there for truancy. But Baltimore made me understand something about survival and beauty that shaped everything I sang. The blues of that city — the way sorrow could be made into something almost gorgeous — was in my voice before I ever stood in front of a microphone. I left Baltimore as a teenager and built my life in New York and on the road, but the city was always in my phrasing, in the way I bent a note until it said what words couldn't reach.”
