1948 – 1959“Robert Allen Zimmerman was born in Duluth, Minnesota, in May 1941, and when he was six his family moved to Hibbing, his mother's hometown, an iron-mining town on the Mesabi Range in northern Minnesota, with long, harsh winters and a vast open-pit mine on its edge. They lived at 2425 Seventh Avenue East, where his father, Abe, ran an electrical and furniture store with his brothers. In his bedroom Bob listened late at night to distant radio stations playing country, blues and rock and roll, from Hank Williams to Muddy Waters and Little Richard, and he taught himself piano and guitar. At Hibbing High School he played in rock and roll bands, pounding the piano like Little Richard at a school talent show. In 1959 he left for the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, where he discovered folk music and took the name Bob Dylan, and in 1961 he moved to New York.”
