1930 – 1947“Buzz Aldrin was born Edwin Eugene Aldrin Jr. in January 1930 and grew up in a Craftsman-style house in the Oakcroft neighbourhood of Upper Montclair, New Jersey, a leafy commuter town west of Manhattan. His nickname came from his sister Fay Ann, who as a toddler said buzzer instead of brother, and the family shortened it to Buzz. His father, Edwin Sr., was a pioneering aviator who had served in the Army Air Service and later became an aviation fuel expert for Standard Oil, and his mother's father had been an army chaplain. Aviation was part of family life. His father flew his own plane and took Buzz up for his first flight when he was two. Young Buzz loved the outdoors, Boy Scouts and sports, and at Montclair High School he played centre on the 1946 undefeated state champion football team and was a pole vaulter. He was a strong student, and his father pushed him hard towards a place at a service academy. After graduating in 1947, he went to West Point, then flew 66 combat missions as a fighter pilot in Korea and earned a doctorate at MIT in orbital rendezvous. In July 1969 he became the second person to walk on the Moon. That year Montclair welcomed him home with a parade and bolted a plaque to a rock outside his childhood home. In 2013 his old high school renamed its science programme the Buzz Aldrin STEM Academy.”
