📍West Des Moines, Iowa, USA
2002 – 2020“Caitlin Clark was born in Des Moines, Iowa, in January 2002 and grew up in West Des Moines, a comfortable, fast-growing suburb on the western edge of Iowa's capital. Her father, Brent, had played basketball and baseball at Simpson College, and her mother, Anne, comes from an athletic family; her grandfather, Bob Nizzi, was a well-known football coach at Dowling Catholic High School. She is the middle of three children, between her older brother, Blake, and younger brother, Colin. The Clark household was relentlessly competitive: board games, backyard games and fierce one-on-one battles in the basement, where she once shoved Colin into a wall chasing a loose ball. She loved basketball most of all, and because her father couldn't find a girls' league for her age, she played in boys' leagues, where she was often the best player. She cried after losses because, she said, she cared so much. In sixth grade she joined a strong club team, All Iowa Attack, and she spent hours on the court perfecting her long-range shooting. At Dowling Catholic High School in West Des Moines, she played four years on the varsity team, once scoring sixty points in a game. She chose to stay in her home state, playing for the University of Iowa, where she became the leading scorer in the history of Division I college basketball and drew record crowds to women's basketball. In 2024 she was the first pick in the WNBA draft, joining the Indiana Fever, and she remains a hero in her hometown.”
