1992 – 2010“Carissa Kainani Moore was born in Honolulu in August 1992, the elder daughter of Carol Lum and Christopher Moore, and grew up in the city with her younger sister, Cayla, who also became a professional surfer. Her father was a former lifeguard and a champion open-water swimmer, three times the winner of the Waikiki Roughwater Swim, and the ocean was at the heart of his life, and soon of hers. When Carissa was about five, before she started kindergarten, her father pushed her into her first wave at Queen's, at Waikiki, the gentle, crowded surf in front of the hotels and Diamond Head, where Duke Kahanamoku had surfed, and she fell in love with it. She has said that what ignited her love of surfing was her dad, and the joy of sharing time in the water together. When she was ten her parents divorced, and she chose to live with her father, because he lived closer to the ocean; when she stayed with her mother inland, she wrote him letters to stay connected to surfing. He became her coach, and she trained relentlessly at Waikiki and on the South Shore, winning a record number of national amateur titles. In 2008, at fifteen, she became the youngest person to win a professional event at the Reef Hawaiian Pro, against men. She went on to win five world titles, the first in 2011, and in 2021 she won the first Olympic gold medal in women's surfing in Japan. Proudly Hawaiian, she founded Moore Aloha to encourage young girls in surfing and has never lost her love of the waves at Waikiki where she started.”
