📍Checotah, Oklahoma, USA
1983 – 2005“Carrie Underwood grew up on her parents' farm outside Checotah, a small town in eastern Oklahoma near Lake Eufaula, the youngest of three daughters. Her father worked at a paper mill and her mother taught elementary school, and the household was close, practical and grounded in church. Farm life meant animals, chores and wide open space, and she has often said that it gave her a deep love of animals and a habit of hard work. She sang from childhood, first at the First Free Will Baptist Church and then at every local event that would have her: the Robbins Memorial talent show, Old Settler's Day and Lions Club gatherings. In a town of a few thousand people, the community watched her grow up on those small stages, and their encouragement mattered. She was also a dedicated student, graduating from Checotah High School in 2001 near the top of her class, and she went on to study journalism at Northeastern State University in Tahlequah. In 2004, almost on a whim, she auditioned for American Idol. The next year she won, and Checotah celebrated as if the whole town had been on that stage with her. Her songs often carry the feel of small-town Oklahoma, with its churches, back roads and loyal families, and she has stayed connected to home, supporting the town's schools and its young people. The girl who sang at the Lions Club now sings at the Grand Ole Opry, where she is a member, but she still talks about Checotah as the place that made her.”
