📍Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USA
1954 – 1972“Christine Marie Evert was born in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, in December 1954, one of five children of Jimmy Evert, a top-ranked tennis player who became the teaching professional at the city's Holiday Park, and Colette Evert. She began playing on the clay courts at Holiday Park at about five, with her father as her coach, and he taught her the steady, two-handed backhand and the patience on clay that became her trademarks. All five Evert children played tennis. At fifteen she beat Margaret Court, the world number one, and in 1971, at sixteen, she reached the semi-finals of the US Open. She went on to win eighteen Grand Slam singles titles, and her rivalry with Martina Navratilova became one of the most famous in sport. The courts at Holiday Park are now named the Jimmy Evert Tennis Center in her father's honour.”
