1985 – 1987“Dwayne Johnson was born in Hayward, California, in May 1972, into a famous wrestling family: his father, Rocky Johnson, was a professional wrestler, and his mother, Ata, is the daughter of the Samoan wrestler Peter Maivia and the promoter Lia Maivia, who ran wrestling shows in Hawaii. Because of his father's career, the family moved often, and in the mid-1980s they settled in Honolulu, where his grandmother's wrestling promotion was based. The Hawaii years were hard. The family struggled for money, and he has spoken about coming home at fourteen to find their Honolulu apartment padlocked and an eviction notice on the door, and seeing his mother break down in tears. He started high school at President William McKinley High School in Honolulu and was big for his age, often mistaken for an undercover police officer. He has said openly that he got into trouble in those years, with fights and thefts, and was arrested several times. Yet he has also said that Hawaii, with its Polynesian community and his mother's Samoan family around him, is where he did much of his growing up. At fifteen the family left Hawaii for Nashville and then Pennsylvania, where a coach at Freedom High School steered him into football and the weight room. He won a football scholarship to the University of Miami, and later followed his father and grandfather into wrestling as The Rock before becoming one of the highest-paid actors in Hollywood. He has returned to McKinley High's weight room to thank the school and inspire the students.”
