1882 – 1910“I was born in 1882 in this house on North Broadway in Nyack, a Hudson River village of shipyards and boatbuilders, which my maternal grandfather, John Smith, had built in 1858. My father kept a dry-goods store on Broadway; my mother encouraged my drawing and took us to the theatre and to exhibitions. From my bedroom window I had a clear view down to the river and the boats and racing yachts sailing out of the port, and I spent hours at the village docks and shipyards, sketching and watching boats being built and rigged; I even built a small sailing boat of my own. I wrote would-be artist on my childhood pencil box. What I noticed most was light: the strong morning sun streaming through the east-facing windows of my room and laying blocks of light across the floor and walls. That same light falls through the windows of Morning Sun, Rooms by the Sea and so many of my later paintings. I left for Manhattan in 1910, but kept coming back for years. The house is now the Edward Hopper House Museum & Study Center.”
