📍Scottsdale, Arizona, USA
1988 – 2004“Emily Jean Stone, known as Emma Stone, was born in Scottsdale, Arizona, in November 1988 and grew up in this sunny desert city on the edge of Phoenix, with its palm-lined streets, golf courses and mountain views. Her father, Jeff, founded and ran a general contracting company, and her mother, Krista, was a homemaker; she has a younger brother, Spencer. She went to Sequoya Elementary School and Cocopah Middle School. From the age of seven she suffered severe anxiety and panic attacks; her first came at a friend's house, when she became convinced the house was on fire. She went to therapy, but it was acting that helped her most. At eleven she made her stage debut as Otter in The Wind in the Willows at Phoenix's Valley Youth Theatre, and she was hooked. She was homeschooled for two years, during which she appeared in sixteen productions there and performed with its improv comedy troupe. She also sang and took voice lessons, and she found that making people laugh eased her nerves. At fifteen she put together a PowerPoint presentation for her parents, titled Project Hollywood, set to Madonna's Hollywood, arguing that she should be allowed to move to Los Angeles. It worked: in January 2004 she and her mother moved to an apartment in Los Angeles, and she took online classes while auditioning. Superbad, Easy A and The Help followed, and she won Oscars for La La Land and Poor Things. She has often credited Valley Youth Theatre with saving her as an anxious child.”
