📍919 Felder Avenue, Montgomery, AL 36106, USA
1931 – 1932“I grew up in St Paul, Minnesota, always the not-quite-rich boy among rich friends, a feeling that runs right through Gatsby. I met Zelda Sayre at a country-club dance in her home town of Montgomery when I was a young army officer, and she refused to marry me until I had money and a name. After a decade of New York, Paris and the Riviera, we came back to Montgomery in the autumn of 1931 with our daughter Scottie and rented this two-storey house on Felder Avenue, in the leafy Cloverdale neighbourhood. It was meant to be a quiet place to mend. I worked on Tender Is the Night here, and took a screenwriting job in Hollywood for a while; Zelda wrote and painted and began the novel that became Save Me the Waltz. By early 1932 her health had broken down again and she went to a clinic in Baltimore, and our Montgomery chapter was over. In 1986 the house was saved from demolition and became the only museum in the world devoted to the two of us.”
