from 1975“Francis Ford Coppola was born in Detroit and grew up in Woodside, Queens, after his father, a flautist, joined Toscanini's NBC Symphony Orchestra. His was a big, musical Italian-American family. At about nine he caught polio and spent a year mostly in bed, cut off from other children; he put on puppet shows for himself, listened to the radio and played with his family's home-movie equipment, and by ten he was making his own 8mm films. That solitary year, he has said, made him the storyteller he became. After The Godfather, in 1975, he used his profits to buy the heart of the historic Inglenook estate in Rutherford, Napa Valley, including the grand old house of its founder, Gustave Niebaum, and some 1,500 acres. Over the following decades he reunited the estate, restored its old winery and in 2011 bought back the Inglenook name itself. The estate has been his family's home and gathering place for half a century, and its vineyards now welcome visitors.”
