📍415 Monroe Street, Hoboken, NJ 07030, USA
1915 – 1935“I was born on Monroe Street in Hoboken, New Jersey on the 12th of December 1915, the only child of Italian immigrants, and Hoboken shaped everything about how I understood loyalty and neighbourhood and the weight of where you come from. It was a tough waterfront town directly across the Hudson from Manhattan — you could see the New York skyline from the street, that impossible glittering promise, and growing up with it visible every day did something to a boy's ambitions. I sang in the Hoboken Four and did local radio before I got my break with Harry James, and by the time I was famous I was sending money home and making sure the old neighbourhood knew I hadn't forgotten it. You can take the boy out of Hoboken, but Hoboken never really left my phrasing.”
