📍Zlatá ulička 22, Prague Castle, 119 00 Prague, Czech Republic
1916 – 1917“I was born in Prague's Old Town and hardly ever left the city — this little mother has claws, I once wrote. I lived for years in my parents' apartment, under the shadow of my overbearing father, working at an insurance institute by day and writing at night, when the household was finally quiet. In late 1916 my youngest sister Ottla, the one who understood me best, rented one of the tiny houses on Golden Lane, the crooked alley of former goldsmiths' and guards' cottages inside the walls of Prague Castle. She let me use it in the evenings. After work I climbed up through the castle, lit the stove, and wrote, then walked back down through the snow to the city after midnight. That winter in house number 22 I wrote almost all the stories later published as A Country Doctor. It was the most productive and contented writing time of my life. Today the little blue house is one of the most visited doorways in Prague.”
