📍Nußdorfer Straße 54, 1090 Vienna, Austria
1797 – 1828“I was born Franz Peter Schubert on the 31st of January 1797 in the Himmelpfortgrund suburb of Vienna, the twelfth child of a schoolmaster. The house on the Nussdorfer Strasse — modest, crowded, the schoolmaster's household — was where I grew up and where I received my earliest musical education from my father and older brother. Vienna was the city of Haydn and Mozart and Beethoven, and I grew up in the shadow of that tradition. I wrote my first symphony at sixteen, was producing songs by the hundred in my teens, and by the time I died at thirty-one had composed over six hundred songs, nine symphonies, and quantities of chamber and piano music. I never left Vienna and never achieved the public recognition I deserved in my lifetime. The Viennese musical world loved my music in private gatherings called Schubertiades but never quite took me as seriously as I was.”
