1738 – 1752“My father Augustine moved us to Ferry Farm on the Rappahannock when I was six years old. The house stood on the river's north bank facing Fredericksburg, and my education consisted chiefly of what I could observe from its windows and fields. My father died when I was eleven, leaving my half-brother Lawrence as my guardian and Mount Vernon as my ambition. At Ferry Farm I learned to survey from the fields themselves, to shoot from the wooded banks, and to manage men from watching my mother Mary's authority over a household that had too many children and too few resources. There was no cherry tree — that story is nonsense invented by a biographer with more sentiment than conscience. What is true is that the river taught me discipline: it floods, it freezes, it gives and takes back. And that the crossing to Fredericksburg taught me that a man must know how to get to the other side.”
