1895 – 1914“I found the Blue Ridge mountains when I was searching for something impossible to name — solitude, perhaps, or scale. Frederick Olmsted laid out three thousand acres of managed forestry and gardens while Richard Morris Hunt gave me 250 rooms of Loire Valley transplanted to North Carolina. My family thought it an extravagance. I thought it a responsibility: the farm employed hundreds, and our forestry model became the template for the United States Forest Service.”
