1945 – 1984“I grew up on a dairy farm in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, and knew by twelve that I would be an artist. In New York I painted giant flowers and skyscrapers and married Alfred Stieglitz, but it was New Mexico that claimed me. For about ten years I tried to buy a ruined Spanish Colonial adobe compound on a hill in the village of Abiquiú, and in late 1945 the Archdiocese of Santa Fe finally sold it to me. My friend Maria Chabot spent four years restoring it with local builders. What drew me was partly its big garden, watered by the village's acequia, the old irrigation ditch: I grew corn, radishes, roses, irises, poppies and hollyhocks, and by the time I moved in for good in 1949 it supplied almost all the fruit and vegetables for my homes. From my studio and bedroom windows I painted the cottonwoods along the Chama River, the road winding past towards Santa Fe, and the flat-topped Pedernal in the distance — my private mountain. The Abiquiú home and studio is now cared for by the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum.”
