📍615 Walnut Street, Milwaukee, WI 53212, USA
1906 – 1912“I came to Milwaukee from Kyiv in 1906, eight years old, to a flat above my father's little grocery on Walnut Street, on the immigrant North Side. My mother ran the shop and would leave me minding the counter when I should have been at school — I hated being late, and I never forgot the sting of being poor. But it was here, in this crowded, striving Jewish quarter, that I found my voice: at eleven I organised my first public meeting, to buy schoolbooks for children whose families could not afford them. Milwaukee gave me my English, my schooling, and my first taste of speaking up for others. The girl who minded that Walnut Street store grew into the woman who would help build, and one day lead, a nation.”
