📍Sacramento, California, USA
1983 – 2002“Greta Gerwig was born in Sacramento, California, in August 1983 and grew up in the River Park neighbourhood, a quiet, leafy area of ranch houses near the American River, in a city she has described with great love. Her mother, Christine, was an OB-GYN nurse, and her father, Gordon, worked on small business loans at a credit union; she has an older brother and sister. The family was Unitarian Universalist, and she has called herself an intense child. She loved dance and wanted to be a dancer, and she later took up competitive fencing, but both became too expensive for the family. She went to St Francis High School, an all-girls Catholic school in Sacramento, where she threw herself into theatre productions and the school's arts programmes, and she graduated in 2002. She has said she was desperate to leave Sacramento for New York and its culture, and only later realised how much she loved her home town. She studied English and philosophy at Barnard College in New York and began acting and writing in independent films, co-writing and starring in Frances Ha, in which her real parents appeared. In 2017 she wrote and directed Lady Bird, about a teenage girl at a Catholic school in Sacramento who longs to escape, a love letter to her home town and her mother that earned her Oscar nominations. She went on to direct Little Women and Barbie, which became the highest-grossing film ever directed by a woman.”
