1931 – 1934“I was born in a log cabin at Mount Olive, Alabama, with a spine condition that brought me pain all my life. My daddy spent years in veterans' hospitals, so Mama raised us on her own, working any job she could find. When our house burned down and we lost everything, a landlord in Georgiana named Thaddeus Rose let Mama have this little raised cottage on Rose Street rent-free until she got back on her feet, and she took in boarders to make ends meet. I shined shoes and sold peanuts on the street, and when I was eight Mama bought me my first guitar. I practised under the raised floor of the house, out of everybody's way. On the streets of Georgiana I found my real teacher, Rufus Payne — everybody called him Tee-Tot — a Black street musician who taught me chords and how to put a song across for tips. Everything I did afterwards came from him. The house on Rose Street opened as the Hank Williams Boyhood Home and Museum in 1993.”
