Hannibal Barca

Ancient worldMilitary leaders

📍Carthage, Tunis, Tunisia

“I grew up in Carthage — the great city my people built on the coast of North Africa, its harbours the finest in the Mediterranean world. My father Hamilcar brought me to the army's sacrificial altar when I was nine years old and made me swear eternal enmity to Rome, and I kept that oath for the rest of my life. When I left Carthage to begin my Italian campaign — crossing Spain, the Pyrenees, the Alps with my elephants — I carried the image of those harbours with me across every mountain pass. I never saw them again.”

👍 LovedThe great double harbour — the finest naval facility in the ancient world. The cosmopolitan city where Phoenician, Greek, North African and Spanish cultures all met.
👎 DislikedThe political divisions within the Carthaginian Senate that prevented me from receiving reinforcements in Italy.
