📍Truman Little White House, 111 Front Street, Key West, FL 33040, USA
1946 – 1952“I grew up on farms and in the small town of Independence, Missouri, where I fell for a little blonde girl named Bess Wallace in Sunday school and spent years working up the courage to court her. I was a farmer, an artillery captain in France and a failed haberdasher before politics found me. As president, my doctor ordered me south for a rest in November 1946, and I arrived at the old commandant's quarters on the Key West naval station — a white clapboard house built in 1890 as the first officers' quarters on the base, once right on the waterfront. I fell for the place at once. Over the next six years I came back eleven times, spending 175 days here: swimming, fishing, walking the base in loud tropical shirts, and playing poker late into the night at a table with a cover that went on whenever Bess came down, since she did not approve of gambling. But I also ran the country from here, drafting speeches and meeting advisers and foreign leaders. I called it the Little White House. Inside, it has hardly changed.”
