1940 – 1961“Jack Nicklaus was born in Columbus, Ohio, in January 1940 and grew up in Upper Arlington, a leafy, well-to-do suburb on the north-west edge of the city, with his younger sister, Marilyn. His father, Charlie, was a pharmacist who ran a small chain of Nicklaus drug stores, and a fine all-round sportsman who had played football, basketball and baseball at Ohio State and been a local tennis champion. His mother, Helen, was quietly supportive, and the family lived for sport, especially Ohio State football. When Charlie broke his ankle and a doctor told him to walk to strengthen it, he took up golf at the Scioto Country Club and brought ten-year-old Jack along to carry his bag. Jack shot 51 for his first nine holes, and the club professional, Jack Grout, took him into his junior classes and became his teacher for life. Jack practised for hours on Scioto's range, winning the first of five straight Ohio junior titles at twelve. He was also a gifted all-round athlete at Upper Arlington High School: a basketball guard who drew interest from college programmes, a baseball catcher, and a footballer, until the Ohio State coach Woody Hayes, a customer at his father's drugstore, advised Charlie to steer him towards golf. At sixteen he won the Ohio Open against professionals, and he went on to Ohio State, winning two US Amateur titles. In 1962 he won the US Open as a rookie professional, beating Arnold Palmer, and he went on to win a record eighteen major championships. He has remained loyal to Columbus, building the Muirfield Village course nearby and hosting the Memorial Tournament there.”
