1931 – 1949“I was born in Marion, Indiana in 1931 but grew up in Fairmount, a small farming community in Grant County, after my parents sent me to live with my aunt and uncle following my mother's death when I was nine. The Winslow farm was where James Dean was really formed — the flat Indiana landscape, the Quaker community, the sense of being an outsider where conformity was the expectation. I was artistic in a place that did not value art, sensitive in a culture that valued toughness. The longing to be somewhere else became the engine of everything I did after I left. I left Fairmount at eighteen and was dead at twenty-four.”
