📍Boplaas, Malmesbury, Western Cape, South Africa
1870 – 1950“I was born Jan Christiaan Smuts on the 24th of May 1870 on the farm Boplaas near Malmesbury in the Cape Colony — now the Western Cape of South Africa. I studied law at Cambridge, fought against the British in the Anglo-Boer War as a guerrilla commander, and then spent the rest of my life working for Anglo-Boer reconciliation and South African unity. I served in both World Wars at the highest levels — in the First World War I commanded the East African campaign, in the Second I was a member of Churchill's Imperial War Cabinet. I helped draft the preamble to the United Nations Charter. I was twice Prime Minister of South Africa. I lost the 1948 election to the National Party, which immediately introduced apartheid. The Western Cape landscape of Boplaas, the fynbos and the mountains, was always the ground I came from.”
