1954 – 1972“Jerry Seinfeld was born in Brooklyn and moved as a small boy with his family to Massapequa, a suburb on Long Island's south shore of new houses, schools and shopping centres. His father, Kálmán, ran his own business, Seinfeld Signs, painting commercial signs, and was a natural comedian who had collected jokes while serving in the Second World War and loved to make customers laugh; his mother, Betty, was a homemaker. His older sister, Carolyn, has said he had an ordinary suburban childhood — Eastlake Elementary, then Massapequa High School — but from early on he studied the comedians on television with total seriousness, trying to work out how a joke was built. After college in New York, he started doing stand-up at open-mic nights in Manhattan clubs, and spent years honing his act. The sitcom Seinfeld, which he created with Larry David, turned the everyday details of life — queues, neighbours, dry cleaners — into comedy, the same close attention he first learned from his father in Massapequa.”
