📍Monongahela, Pennsylvania, USA
1956 – 1974“Joe Montana was born in New Eagle, Pennsylvania, in June 1956 and grew up in nearby Monongahela, a small steel and coal town on the Monongahela River south of Pittsburgh. He was an only child of Joe Sr., who worked for a finance company, and Theresa, and his father, a keen sportsman, devoted himself to his son's athletic development. Before Joe was a year old, his father gave him a bat and ball; later he put up a hoop and hung a tyre in the backyard for Joe to throw footballs through, over and over. He was a thin but gifted all-round athlete. He pitched perfect games in Little League, played basketball, and idolised Joe Namath, another quarterback from western Pennsylvania, which was famous for producing great quarterbacks. Monongahela was a close-knit, Catholic, working-class town, and sport was central to life. At Ringgold High School he played football, basketball and baseball; he spent his first two years as a backup quarterback before winning the starting job as a junior, and he helped the basketball team win the regional championship in 1973. In his senior year, North Carolina State offered him a basketball scholarship, but he chose to play football at Notre Dame, his boyhood dream, graduating in 1978. With the San Francisco 49ers he won four Super Bowls and became known as Joe Cool, famous for his calm under pressure. Monongahela remembers him with signs and celebrations, and he has always credited his father's backyard drills.”
