1894 – 1917“I was born John Martin Feeney on the 1st of February 1894 in Cape Elizabeth, Maine, the thirteenth child of Irish immigrant parents. The sea and the rocky coastline of my childhood gave me the visual vocabulary — the wide horizons, the human figures small against vast landscapes — that characterised my filmmaking. I went to Hollywood as a young man and became John Ford, spending fifty years making films about American mythology — the cavalry, the frontier, the immigrant Irish, the moment when the West was won and what was lost in the winning. The Maine coast, the Irish immigrant family, the Catholic faith — these were the foundations.”
