1992 – 2011“John John Florence was born in Honolulu in October 1992, the eldest of three brothers, and was named after John F. Kennedy Jr., known as John John. His mother, Alexandra, a surfer from New Jersey, raised the boys largely on her own on Oahu's North Shore, working bar jobs while studying for a degree. When John John was small, the family had to leave their home, and Alexandra asked the owners of a beachfront vacation house at the Banzai Pipeline if they would rent it long term; a month later they moved in, to a house right in front of the most famous wave in the world. Alexandra had John John on a surfboard as a baby, and by three he had ridden his first wave; by five he was surfing on his own. Growing up at Pipeline, he watched the world's best surfers ride the giant barrels outside his front door every winter, and he learned to read the reefs and currents of the North Shore. His younger brothers surfed too, and the house was always full of surfers. At six he was sponsored by O'Neill, at eight he got his first barrel at Pipeline, and at twelve he was on the cover of Surfer magazine. At thirteen he became the youngest surfer ever to compete in the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing. At nineteen he became the youngest to win the Triple Crown, and he went on to win world titles in 2016, 2017 and 2024. He has also become a sailor, filmmaker and photographer. He still lives on the North Shore, close to the house at Pipeline where he grew up.”
