📍Douglaston, Queens, NY 11363, USA
1963 – 1977“John McEnroe was born in Wiesbaden, West Germany, in February 1959, where his father, an Irish-American, was serving with the US Air Force, and soon afterwards the family moved to New York and settled in Douglaston, a quiet, leafy neighbourhood on the north-eastern edge of Queens, near Little Neck Bay. His father, John Sr., worked in advertising by day and studied law at Fordham at night, and his mother, Kay, was a nurse; John was the eldest of three brothers, including Patrick, who also became a tennis professional. He started playing at eight at the Douglaston Club, a short walk from home, with his brothers, and he was soon beating older boys. At twelve he joined the Port Washington Tennis Academy on Long Island, where he trained under Tony Palafox and the famous coach Harry Hopman, and was ranked among the best juniors in the country. He was bright, intense and argumentative, a perfectionist who hated to lose and who often clashed with officials even as a boy. He went to Trinity School in Manhattan, an academically demanding private school, graduating in 1977. That summer, at eighteen, he came through qualifying to reach the Wimbledon semi-finals, and after a year at Stanford, where he won the college championship, he turned professional. He won seven Grand Slam singles titles, including three Wimbledons and four US Opens, and became famous for his artistry and his temper. He has always been a proud New Yorker, and he later opened a tennis academy on Randall's Island.”
