📍Sayreville, New Jersey, USA
1962 – 1980“Jon Bon Jovi was born John Francis Bongiovi Jr. in Perth Amboy, New Jersey, in March 1962 and grew up in nearby Sayreville, a working-class town of brick factories, clay pits and suburban streets on the Raritan River in central Jersey. His parents had both served in the Marines; his father, John, was a barber and his mother, Carol, a florist, and they raised Jon and his two younger brothers in a close Italian-American Catholic family. He was a restless student who cared more about music than schoolwork. He began playing guitar as a boy, formed his first band, Raze, at thirteen, and at fifteen saw Bruce Springsteen in concert and knew what he wanted to do with his life. After two years at St Joseph High School in Metuchen, he moved to Sayreville War Memorial High School, and as a teenager he played the clubs of the Jersey Shore with a cover band called the Atlantic City Expressway, where he met his future keyboardist, David Bryan. After high school he worked as a janitor and errand runner at the Power Station, the Manhattan recording studio run by his cousin Tony Bongiovi, recording demos at night. One of them, Runaway, became a local radio hit in 1983, and he formed the band Bon Jovi. Livin' on a Prayer and Wanted Dead or Alive made them one of the biggest rock bands in the world, and Jon has always carried the blue-collar spirit of Sayreville, giving back through his foundation's work in New Jersey.”
