1922 – 1926

“I was born Frances Ethel Gumm in June 1922 in Grand Rapids, a lumber and paper-mill town among the lakes and pine forests of northern Minnesota, the youngest of three girls. We lived in a two-storey white clapboard house on South Pokegama Avenue, and my parents, Frank and Ethel, both vaudeville performers, ran the town's movie theatre, the New Grand. My sisters, Mary Jane and Virginia, sang there as the Gumm Sisters, and when I was two and a half, at a Christmas show, I toddled out onto the stage and sang Jingle Bells over and over, refusing to stop until my father carried me off. I always remembered those Minnesota years as joyful: the snow, the lake, our family together and a stage of my own. When I was four we moved to Lancaster, California, and soon my childhood was spent on stages and studio lots instead. My childhood home was moved to the edge of town and restored, and it is now part of the Judy Garland Museum, which holds the largest collection of my life and The Wizard of Oz in the world.”

👍 LovedSinging on my parents' stage as a little girl, and Minnesota winters
👎 DislikedLosing my childhood to the studios so young
