1981 – 1993“Justin Timberlake was born in Memphis, Tennessee, in January 1981 and grew up in Millington and Shelby Forest, quiet communities of woods, churches and small farms just north of the city. His parents divorced when he was small, and he was raised mainly by his mother, Lynn, and his stepfather, Paul Harless, a banker, while his father, Randall, a choir director at a Baptist church, remarried. Music was everywhere: his grandfather introduced him to gospel and country, and he sang in church from a young age. Memphis's musical heritage surrounded him, from Elvis to Al Green and the soul of Stax, and he absorbed it all. He was singing at local talent shows by the time he was eight, often country songs. In 1992, at eleven, he appeared on the television talent show Star Search under the name Justin Randall, singing country music, and lost in the first round. Soon after, he went to an open casting call for Disney's The Mickey Mouse Club, and in 1993 he joined the cast in Orlando, alongside Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera and Ryan Gosling. When the show ended, he joined a new boy band, NSYNC, which became one of the biggest acts of the late 1990s. He went on to a solo career mixing pop, R&B and soul, and to acting. He has often spoken of how Memphis's music, from the gospel of his family's churches to the soul of the city's studios, shaped his sound, and he has returned to Tennessee for charity work and performances.”
