📍Golden, Texas, USA
1988 – 2006“Kacey Musgraves grew up in Golden, a tiny farming community in east Texas, in a creative household. Her father, Craig, ran a small printing business in nearby Carthage, and her mother, Karen, was an artist. Golden is the kind of place where everyone knows everyone and the annual Sweet Potato Festival is a major event, and Kacey has drawn on its small-town humour, gossip and kindness ever since. Music arrived early. She wrote her first song, Notice Me, for her elementary school graduation at the age of eight. Her mother drove her to festivals and talent shows across the region, where she sang and yodelled old western swing standards, and with her friend Alina Tatum she formed the duo Texas Two Bits, which toured Texas and released an independent album. She learned the mandolin first, then took up the guitar at twelve, and spent her teens singing on small stages where she learned to win over an audience of strangers. She graduated from Mineola High School in 2006 and moved to Austin at eighteen, then to Nashville. Her first albums, full of wry songs about small-town life, gossip and the freedom to be yourself, sounded like they could only have come from somewhere like Golden. Same Trailer Different Park and Golden Hour, which won the Grammy for Album of the Year, carried her home town's warmth and dry wit to the world and onto the biggest stages in country music.”
