1924 – 2021

“I was born David Kaunda on the 28th of April 1924 at Lubwa mission in the Chinsali district of Northern Rhodesia, the son of an African Church of Scotland missionary. The mission gave me the Christian values of service and human dignity that informed my political philosophy of Zambian Humanism. I led Northern Rhodesia to independence as Zambia in 1964 and governed for twenty-seven years. In 1991 I lost a democratic election and conceded — one of the first African presidents to do so peacefully. Kenneth Kaunda who had governed for twenty-seven years accepted the verdict of an election and went home. The Lubwa mission childhood, the Christian humanism, the peaceful concession of power — these were the arc of a life I am not ashamed of.”

👍 LovedThe Lubwa mission and the Christian values it instilled. Zambian independence in 1964. The peaceful concession of the 1991 election that modelled democratic norms for Africa.
👎 DislikedThe one-party state of the middle years. The economic difficulties of the copper price collapse. The long disease of AIDS that ravaged Zambia and killed my own son.
