📍Al-Hummar, Amman, Jordan
1935 – 1999“I was born Hussein bin Talal on the 14th of November 1935 in Amman, the son of King Talal of Jordan and Princess Zein al-Sharaf. I became King of Jordan at seventeen after my father's abdication, and I governed for forty-six years until my death in 1999. Jordan was and is a small state surrounded by larger powers in permanent conflict, and my life's work was keeping it alive — navigating between Israel, the Palestinians, Syria, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, and the great powers with the limited leverage a small kingdom possesses. I made peace with Israel in 1994. I was the Arab leader most trusted by the Israelis and most respected by the Palestinians, which means I satisfied neither fully. Amman — its hills, its Roman ruins, its Palestinian refugee camps — was the city I governed from and loved.”
