1967 – 1987“I grew up in Aberdeen, Washington — a logging and fishing town on the coast of the Olympic Peninsula where it rains two hundred days a year and the sky is the colour of old concrete. My parents divorced when I was nine and my childhood after that was chaotic — I moved between relatives, slept on friends' couches, spent a period living under a bridge over the Wishkah River. Aberdeen was economically depressed and culturally isolated, and being a sensitive kid who wanted to make art in a town that valued toughness was its own particular kind of education in alienation. But the music was always there — the records my uncle gave me, the guitar I taught myself to play, the bands I formed in garages with whoever would turn up. Aberdeen was the wound and the gift, and I spent the rest of my life trying to understand what it had made me.”
