1939 – 1956“Lee Trevino was born near Dallas, Texas, in December 1939, and never knew his father. He was raised by his mother, Juanita, and his grandfather, Joe Trevino, a Mexican immigrant gravedigger, and he started working in the onion and cotton fields at five. When he was about seven, the family moved into a small frame house with no electricity or running water, which stood in a hayfield right beside the seventh fairway of the Glen Lakes Country Club in north Dallas. From his window, young Lee watched the golfers play. At eight he was hunting for lost balls in the rough and selling them back to players, and soon he was caddying at Glen Lakes, earning around thirty dollars a week. Caddies weren't allowed to play the course, so he and his friends carved out their own three-hole course in a field behind the caddie shack, where he learned to hit low, creative shots. He left school after the seventh grade to work full time for the club's greenkeeper, and later worked at Hardy's, a par-three course and driving range in Dallas, where he hustled bets by playing with a Dr Pepper bottle taped up as a club. At seventeen he joined the Marines, and after his service he returned to Texas and turned professional. In 1968 he won the US Open, and he went on to win six major championships with his unorthodox, self-taught swing and constant jokes, earning the nickname the Merry Mex. He has always been proud of the hayfield house by the seventh fairway, and of the grandfather who raised him.”
