“Lalisa Manobal was born in 1997 in Buriram Province and grew up in Bangkok, raised by her Thai mother, Chitthip, and her Swiss stepfather, Marco Brüschweiler, a chef who settled in Thailand. Lisa has spoken warmly of him as her father, and of a home where both cultures sat comfortably together. Her parents noticed early that she could not stop moving to music, and they took her to dance classes from the age of four. Bangkok's youth dance scene became her second home. She trained for hours, entered competitions across the country and joined the crew We Zaa Cool, whose members included Kunpimook Bhuwakul, later known as BamBam of GOT7. Her stepfather encouraged her seriously, driving her to classes and cheering at competitions. In 2010, at thirteen, she went to YG Entertainment's audition in Thailand. Out of roughly 4,000 hopefuls she was the only one selected, and she moved alone to Seoul in 2011 to train, without speaking Korean. The early months were lonely, and she had to learn the language as she trained. When Blackpink debuted in 2016, she became one of the first Thai artists to achieve global stardom in K-pop. She has since returned home often, filmed her solo music in Thai settings, and made a point of celebrating Thai culture to a worldwide audience, a gesture that has made her a national hero in the city where she first learned to dance.”
