📍Ormond Beach, FL, USA
1982 – 1985“Lisa Andersen was born in Amityville, New York, in March 1969, and spent her early childhood in Maryland and Virginia, before her family moved to Ormond Beach, a quiet coastal town in Florida just north of Daytona Beach, with long, flat beaches and small Atlantic waves. Her home life was difficult and tense, and she found her escape at the beach and in the town's surf shops. She started surfing at about thirteen, borrowing boards and learning on the small, choppy waves of Ormond Beach, often the only girl in the line-up among the boys, who did not always welcome her. She surfed every day she could, and she became one of the best surfers in Florida, boy or girl. But her parents did not support her surfing, and at sixteen, with money saved from busing tables at a pancake house, she bought a one-way ticket to Los Angeles, leaving a note saying that she was going to California to become the women's world surfing champion. She settled with a friend in Huntington Beach, sleeping on couches and entering amateur contests, and soon she was winning them. She turned professional, and from 1994 to 1997 she won four consecutive world titles, part of the time as the only mother on the tour, and she became one of the most influential surfers of her era, inspiring a generation of girls to surf, partly through her role with the brand Roxy. In 1996 she became the first woman on the cover of Surfer magazine in years. She kept her promise from that note.”
