1998 – 2008“Luke Combs was born in Charlotte, North Carolina, in 1990, an only child, and when he was eight his family moved west to Asheville, a mountain city in the Blue Ridge, surrounded by forests, rivers and small farms. He has said he has been singing for as long as he could talk, and as a little boy he wore out cassette tapes of Brooks & Dunn, Clint Black and Vince Gill, singing along in the car and around the house. At A.C. Reynolds High School, in the eastern suburbs of Asheville, he played football and sang in the school's choral groups, and with them he performed a solo at Carnegie Hall in New York. For a while as a teenager he drifted away from country music, but discovering the songs of Eric Church brought him back. He loved the outdoors of the Appalachian mountains, and he spent his free time with friends on the back roads and creeks around Asheville. In 2008 he went to Appalachian State University in Boone, higher up in the mountains, to study criminal justice, hoping to become a detective. There he started playing guitar seriously and played his first country show at a local bar. Encouraged by the crowds, he left college and in 2014 moved to Nashville. His song Hurricane went viral in 2016, and he has since become one of country music's biggest stars, singing about small-town life, friendship and beer with a warmth that his fans recognise from their own hometowns.”
