1951 – 1973“I was born in 1908 in a small farmhouse on the banks of the Pedernales River in the Texas Hill Country, and in 1913 we moved to Johnson City, a town named after my family, into a modest white house where I lived until I married Lady Bird. We were often poor; my father's fortunes rose and fell, and I learned early what hard times do to people. As a young man I taught Mexican-American children in a segregated school in Cotulla, and the hunger I saw in their faces never left me — it is why I fought for civil rights and the war on poverty. As a senator I bought my aunt's ranch just down the river from where I was born, and it became my true home. As president I ran the country from here so often that people called it the Texas White House, and I loved driving visitors around the pastures and showing them my cattle and the river. Lady Bird and I are buried in the family cemetery on the ranch, beside the Pedernales, a short walk from the house where I was born.”
