1983 – 2003“Elizabeth Mae Hale was born in Red Lion, a small town in York County, south-central Pennsylvania, in October 1983, and grew up in the countryside nearby with her parents and younger brother, Arejay. For two years the family lived in a log cabin in the woods with no neighbours, which made Lzzy and Arejay extremely close, and later they moved to a twenty-acre farm. Their parents loved music, and the house was full of their records, from Eddie Van Halen and Black Sabbath to Pat Benatar and Alice Cooper. Lzzy began learning the piano at five, and Arejay took up drums. In 1997, when Lzzy was thirteen and Arejay ten, the siblings started writing and performing their own songs, and they signed up for a talent show at the Schuylkill County Fair; on the drive there, Arejay suggested the name Halestorm. Their father, Roger, joined them on bass, and they played their first shows at local fairs, festivals and bars, with Lzzy playing keytar. At sixteen she started guitar lessons, and she quickly became a powerful guitarist with an enormous voice. They played hundreds of shows around Pennsylvania as teenagers, building a loyal local following, and released their first EPs. In 2005 Halestorm signed with Atlantic Records, and in 2013 their song Love Bites (So Do I) won the Grammy for best hard rock or metal performance, making Lzzy the first woman to win it as frontwoman of a band. She has become one of the most celebrated women in rock and metal, and she remains proud of the Pennsylvania farm country where the band was born.”
