1924 – 1943“I was born in Omaha, Nebraska in 1924, the son of Dorothy Pennebaker and Marlon Brando Sr. My mother was a beautiful, charismatic alcoholic who introduced me to performance; my father was cold and withholding. We moved to Evanston, Illinois when I was six, but Omaha was where the essential tension of my character was formed — between a mother whose love was real but unreliable and a father whose disapproval was consistent and crushing. I was sent to military school at fifteen and expelled. I came to New York at twenty, studied with Stella Adler, and she changed everything — she gave me a technique that could channel the rage and the tenderness of an Omaha childhood into something that illuminated what it meant to be human.”
